Overview of EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar's Visit to Jamaica, Suriname & T&T from May 2–10, 2026

Union Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), undertook an official visit to Jamaica, Suriname, and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) from May 2–10, 2026, to strengthen India's engagement with Caribbean nations.

Visit to Jamaica (May 2–4, 2026):

• Held delegation-level talks with PM Andrew Holness and FM Kamina Johnson Smith
• India and Jamaica signed 3 MoUs covering health cooperation, solarisation, and broadcasting

Visit to Suriname (May 6–7, 2026):

• Co-chaired the 9th Joint Commission Meeting with FM Melvin Bouva
• Met President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and National Assembly Chairman Ashwin Adhin
• Handed over a passion fruit processing facility completed under Indian grant assistance
• Offered soft loans for infrastructure and strategic sectors

Visit to T&T:

• Held bilateral meeting with PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar
• Both countries signed 8 MoUs covering a wide range of areas of bilateral cooperation

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Participates in Sikkim Statehood Day; Launches Mission Sikkim Organics

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Ministry of Communication and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), participated in the 51st Statehood Day celebrations of Sikkim on 16 May 2026 at Manan Kendra in Gangtok, Sikkim.

Background: Sikkim commemorates 16 May every year as 'Sikkimi State Day' to mark its integration with the Union of India in 1975. Sikkim became the 22nd state through the Constitution (36th Amendment) Act, 1975.

Key People: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Governor of Sikkim Om Prakash Malthur, and CM Prem Singh Tamang were present.

Mission Sikkim Organics: Launched with an outlay of ₹360 crore to strengthen organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices in the state.

Other Projects: Inaugurated and laid foundation stone for 21 development projects worth ₹223 crore supported by MDoNER, including strategic road and bridge projects under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) and the ₹24.52 crore Rimbi Khola–Yukam road upgrade project.

PFRDA Launches New Retirement Scheme for Retirees Under NPS

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) introduced a new post-retirement framework under the National Pension System (NPS), providing subscribers greater flexibility in periodic payout options post retirement.

Objective: Launched Retirement Income Schemes (RIS) aimed at providing more flexible periodic payout options during the decumulation phase, while also supporting corpus appreciation.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates India's 1st SME-led Semiconductor ATMP/OSAT Facility in Rajasthan

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), virtually inaugurated India's 1st Small and Medium Enterprise (SME)-led semiconductor ATMP/OSAT (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging / Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, marking the state's formal entry into the semiconductor ecosystem.

Bhopal Introduces India's 1st Solar-Powered 'Algae Tree' to Tackle Air Pollution

Vishwas Sarang, Minister of Co-operation, Madhya Pradesh (MP), inaugurated India's first 'Algae Tree' at Swami Vivekananda Park in Bhopal, MP, to reduce urban air pollution.

Developer: Developed by Mushroom World Group after two years of research involving over 50 experts and engineers.

Technology: Solar-powered bioreactor using microalgae to absorb CO₂ and release oxygen; operates on integrated solar panels without dependence on the conventional power grid.

Urban Utility: Designed for densely populated urban areas.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Constitutes Committee on Empowerment of Women

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted the parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women for the year 2026–27 with effect from April 21, 2026.

Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari, MP and Senior BJP leader, has been appointed as the Chairperson.

Background: The Committee is a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), first constituted on April 29, 1997, during the 11th Lok Sabha, in pursuance of two identical resolutions moved in both Houses of Parliament on March 8, 1996.

Composition: 30 members — 20 nominated by the Speaker from Lok Sabha and 10 nominated by the Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

• Lok Sabha: Hema Malini, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Iqra Choudhary, among others
• Rajya Sabha: Sudha Murty, PT Usha, Swati Maliwal, among others

Tenure: Does not exceed one year; reconstituted year after year.

Significance: Reviews National Commission for Women (NCW) reports, advises government on women's welfare, equality, education, and representation; monitors women-related schemes and examines issues referred by Parliament.

NHAI Launches 'Project Saksham' to Empower Rural Women

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in collaboration with the Vertis Foundation, launched 'Project Saksham' to empower rural women through skill development and employment opportunities.

Objectives: Provide industry-relevant skills, promote financial independence, and create access to formal employment opportunities for rural women.

Training Network: Operates through 12 training centres across India, providing underserved communities with industry-relevant skills and pathways to formal employment.

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi undertook an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 15 May 2026, as part of the first leg of his 5-nation tour (UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy).

Bilateral Meeting: PM Modi held a high-level meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.

MoUs in Energy Sector:

• MoU between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) (GoI) and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) (UAE) — to strengthen India's energy security
• Strategic collaboration agreement between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and ADNOC — long-term supply of LPG

MoUs in Maritime Sector:

• Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Drydocks World (DDW) (UAE) — to establish a ship repair cluster, including offshore fabrication, at Vadinar, Gujarat
• Tripartite agreement between CSL, DDW, and Centre of Excellence in Maritime & Shipbuilding (CEMS) — skill development in ship repair supporting the Skill India Mission (SIM)

Investment Commitment: UAE announced investment worth USD 5 billion in India by various UAE entities.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister (CM) of Assam, inaugurated India's 1st Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered 'phygital' banking branch of Slice Small Finance Bank (Slice SFB) in Guwahati, Assam.

Model: The phygital banking model combines physical banking infrastructure with advanced digital technologies to offer seamless, faster, and customer-friendly banking services.

AI-Enabled Services: AI-enabled customer support, automated banking solutions, digital onboarding, and smart service systems to improve operational efficiency and customer convenience.

Future Expansion: Extends access to responsible credit, savings, and payment solutions to individuals and small businesses, especially those with limited access to modern banking services.

Nepal's Kami Rita Sherpa & Lhakpa Sherpa Break Own Mount Everest Climbing Records

Nepali mountaineers Kami Rita Sherpa, known as the 'Everest Man', and Lhakpa Sherpa, known as the 'Mountain Queen', created history by scaling the 8,849 m (29,032 ft) Mount Everest for the 32nd and 11th times respectively, breaking their own world records for the highest number of Everest ascents.

About Mount Everest: Known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan; stands on the Nepal–China border; first climbed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

Actor Ishaan Khatter Receives Honorary Membership of 45 Cavalry Regiment

Actor Ishaan Khatter was conferred with an honorary membership of the 45 Cavalry Regiment of the Indian Armoured Corps for his portrayal of a 45 Cavalry officer in the film 'Pippa' and for showing respect towards the regiment's ethos and legacy.

Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi Sworn in as Iraq's Youngest Prime Minister

Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi, nominated by the Coordination Framework, was sworn in as the new Prime Minister (PM) of Iraq and Commander-in-Chief of the country's Armed Forces. At 40 years old, he makes history as the youngest Prime Minister in Iraq's modern history.

The ceremony was held in Baghdad, Iraq, where outgoing PM Mohammed Shia al-Sudani formally transferred power.

Cabinet Approval: During a session chaired by Speaker Haibet al-Halbousi, Parliament approved 14 out of 23 ministerial positions in a session attended by 266 lawmakers. Remaining portfolios delayed due to ongoing coalition negotiations.

Acquisitions & Mergers

Prudential Buys 75% Stake in Bharti Life Insurance for ₹3,500 Crore

British insurer and asset manager Prudential plc announced its plan to acquire 75% stake in Bharti Life Insurance Company Limited in a deal valued at an initial ₹3,500 crore (~USD 389 million).

Acquirer Breakdown:

• 60% from Bharti Life Ventures Pvt. Ltd
• 15% from funds managed by 360 ONE Asset Management

Post-Acquisition: Prudential's India operations will include majority-owned Bharti Life Insurance and Prudential HCL Health Insurance Limited, plus minority stakes in ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company Limited (35%) and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited (22%).

Condition: Prudential will be required to lower its shareholding in ICICI Prudential Life Insurance below 10% for regulatory approval.

Key Role of Bharti Life: Mandated to explore strategic distribution agreements with Bharti Airtel and 360 ONE Asset Management.

MoF Approves Emirates NBD to Acquire Up to 74% Stake in RBL Bank

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) approved UAE-based Emirates NBD's USD 3 billion (₹26,850 crore) proposal to acquire a 49%–74% stake in RBL Bank through preferential allotment and mandatory open offer — one of the largest FDI deals in India's banking and financial services sector.

Integration: Amalgamation of Emirates NBD India branches with RBL Bank operations to strengthen digital banking, corporate lending, wealth management, and international banking presence.

Management Control: Emirates NBD will gain management control; RBL Bank will be classified as a wholly-owned foreign bank subsidiary under Indian banking regulations.

Subject to final approval from the RBI and other procedural clearances.
