Surha Taal in UP's Ballia Designated as India's 100th Ramsar Site

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) officially designated Surha Taal, officially known as Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, located in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh (UP), as India's 100th Ramsar Site and the 13th Ramsar Site in UP, recognizing it as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.

The announcement was made at the World Environment Day (June 5) programme in Lucknow, UP.

This milestone makes India the country with the highest number of Ramsar Sites in Asia and one of the leading nations globally in Ramsar-recognized wetlands.

Surha Taal: A natural perennial oxbow lake situated in the Ganga and Saryu river system, formed from a meander of the Ganga river and receiving freshwater through three channels.

Overview of President of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing's Visit to India from May 30 to June 3, 2026

U Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, undertook a 5-day official visit to India from May 30 to June 3, 2026, at the invitation of PM Narendra Modi — his 1st-ever official tour to India and 1st foreign trip since being sworn in as Myanmar's President in April 2026.

GoI Forms 6 Sector-Specific Groups to Identify 100 Products to Boost Manufacturing

The Government of India (GoI) formed 6 sector-specific working groups tasked to identify a maximum of 100 products to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce India's reliance on imports.

These groups will be chaired by Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary of DPIIT, MoC&I.

Key Objectives: Strengthen India's manufacturing sector locally and globally; reduce the outflow of foreign exchange.

Focus Areas (6 Sectors):

  1. Pharmaceuticals, biotech & medical devices
  2. Chemicals & petrochemicals

NSO's Provisional Estimates for FY26: India's GDP Grew 7.7% in FY26; Q4 Growth Accelerates to 7.8%

The National Statistics Office (NSO), under MoSPI, released the Provisional Estimates (PE) of Annual GDP for FY26 and Quarterly Estimates for Q4 (January–March) of FY26.

India's GDP for full FY26 stood at 7.7%, which is 60 bps higher than 7.1% recorded in FY25. The latest estimates use 2022–23 as base year (revised GDP series introduced in February 2026).

India slipped to the 7th spot in global market capital (mcap) rankings, with a total market valuation of USD 4.84 trillion, replaced by South Korea which moved to 6th with USD 5.01 trillion, based on Bloomberg data.

Earlier in May 2026, India was pushed to 6th by Taiwan (now 5th with USD 5.15 trillion).

Air India & Riyadh Air Sign Agreement to Boost India–Saudi Air Connectivity

Air India, the flag carrier airline of India, and Saudi Arabia's new premium national carrier Riyadh Air signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance premium travel options, streamline bookings, and expand flight connectivity between India, Saudi Arabia, and global destinations.
